IRCRC deplores Indiana's new charge of feticide against Purvi Patel in St. Joseph County. The feticide law was enacted to protect pregnant women from third party attackers. It was never intended for use against pregnant women. She needed health care, not law enforcement.

IN Infant Mortality

Dr. Virginia Caine and her partners are to be commended for reducing Marion County's infant mortality, but it is still excessive and the racial disparity is intolerable, 12.7 per 1000 births for black infants to 5.2 for white. Statewide infant mortality ranks 47th among states. The impact is sharpest at the intersection of gender, class and racial oppression.
